Here is the champion of Miss Unicorn below her neon sign. The idea stemmed from a few failed attempts to make a different illustration work. I had to step away and just work the way I felt was natural. Using a friend of mine as a model, I sketched the horn onto a quick doodle of her, and I LOVED the shape. From there I just had to pick a theme, color scheme, and key pieces that would lend themselves to the composition. The grungy take on a unicorn girl came from my desire to keep it contemporary so the piece didn't slip into Arthurian style fantasy illustration, something I wasn't drawn to. Then while on that layer I used the magic wand tool (you'll see the selected area enclosed by "marching ants" line) and selected the red, then you go to select>modify>contract and then contract by 2 pixels. Now when you start new layers you'll stay within the red selected bit.
